about
A love letter written to thoughts of suicide. This is a song about the tug of death that a person struggling with depression often has to steer themselves away from. A pull that occurs so often they eventually begin to feel a certain level of peace and comfort within it. The same way we can find ourselves in a terrible relationship with a lover, if we stick around long enough we may find ourselves more comfortable with the discomfort than we are with safety and peace. We begin to manufacture our own set of rules and build our own world that allows for an incredibly unsafe dynamic to be normalized. While it is a love letter, it is also a “Dear John”. It spells out the inherent impractical nature of the relationship. The perspective of the narrator is that of someone who has decided not to kill themselves, but is also keenly aware that this familiar tug will pull at them again. They will have to decide to leave the unhealthy relationship over and over again. Taking slow gradual steps further and further away from a dangerous pull of the unknown that they will always feel called to and comforted by.
